Lamacoid material. What the plate is made of.
Lamacoid material is a rigid plastic laminate with two layers: a thin coloured cap bonded to a core of a contrasting colour. Engraving cuts through the cap, so the core colour forms the letters. The laminate we run is acrylic, in 1/16" (1.6 mm) and 1/8" thicknesses, and it doesn't conduct electricity.

What is lamacoid material made of?
Plastic. A lamacoid is engraving laminate, with a thin coloured surface bonded to a core of another colour. The laminate we run is acrylic-based, rigid and non-conductive. The word lamacoid describes the finished product, though, so it doesn't tell you the exact substrate on its own.
What's the difference between cap and core?
The cap is the top layer and sets the background colour. The core is underneath and becomes the letters once engraving removes the cap. On a black/white plate the cap is black and the core is white. Laminate with one cap over one core is called 2-ply, and it's what panel tags are cut from.
How thick is lamacoid material?
1/16" (1.6 mm) is the everyday thickness. 1/8" makes a stiffer plate for larger sizes, standalone plates and hanging tags.

Can I buy lamacoid sheets?
Our builder and quotes are for finished, engraved plates, cut from 24" × 24" laminate sheets. If you run your own engraver and want blank sheet, go to a laminate maker such as Trotec (TroLase) or Rowmark, or their distributors. If you don't have an engraver, ordering finished plates is usually the simpler route.
What if my spec names a material?
Send that part of the spec with your order. Lamacoid is a product name, not a material specification, and the name alone doesn't establish a temperature, UV, chemical or fire rating. If a drawing asks for a certain substrate, thickness or grade, it gets confirmed before engraving instead of assumed.
Is lamacoid material good outdoors?
It's used outdoors on rooftop units, solar equipment and EV chargers. The lettering is the core of the plate, so rain can't lift it, and the laminate doesn't soak up water. Screw outdoor plates on, and say the plate is going outside so the grade and mounting get confirmed for that spot.

Plastic. Metal engraved tags exist, but they're a different product, and we don't make them.
