A valve tag is a lamacoid with a hanging hole. The plate is two-colour phenolic, engraved through the surface layer so the number and service name are cut into the material rather than printed on it. That matters on valves: tags get knocked, wiped down and splashed for years, and a printed tag is unreadable long before the valve needs attention.
Black / white, 2 × 2 in. Number over service name.

White / blue is a common choice for chilled and domestic water.
What to put on a valve tag
- Tag number. Usually a prefix for the system (HW, CHW, FP, CA, GAS) and a sequence number that matches the valve schedule and the drawings.
- Service. A short description: HOT WATER SUPPLY, SPRINKLER CONTROL, CHILLED WATER RETURN. Keep it to what fits legibly; the schedule holds the rest.
- Optional lines. Normally open or closed, the area served, or a flow arrow. Say if you want a symbol and we will confirm how it engraves at the tag size.
Send the schedule as a spreadsheet with one row per valve. Prefix changes, skipped numbers and one-off descriptions are all normal; every tag is engraved from its own row.
Sizes and pricing
Valve tags are priced by area, before tax, shipping and any specification-dependent adjustments. A full building schedule usually crosses the 25, 50 or 100 piece volume tiers.

Rectangular tags with square or rounded corners are standard. For round tags or other shapes, send a dimensioned drawing and we will confirm it before quoting.
Hanging and mounting
Hanging hole
One hole, drilled to your diameter, for a ball chain, wire loop or zip tie around the valve stem or handwheel. Tell us the fastener and we size the hole to suit.
Screw holes
Two holes for fixing the tag to a pipe bracket, an equipment frame or a wall plate beside the valve.
Adhesive backing
For flat surfaces on nearby equipment or a valve chart board. Not the choice for a tag that will be handled or hosed down.
Matching pipe and equipment identification
Most valve tag orders arrive with the rest of the mechanical room: pump and chiller equipment nameplates, breaker and disconnect tags for the starters, and warning plates for pressure and chemical hazards. Sending one list for the whole room keeps the colours and text heights consistent and usually lands the order in a better volume tier.
Valve tag questions
Can you engrave a numbered sequence of valve tags?
Yes. Send the start and end numbers, or a list of tag numbers with the service name for each valve, and every tag is engraved individually. Skipped numbers and prefixes such as HW-, CHW- or FP- are fine.
What size should a valve tag be?
A 2 × 2 inch tag carries a number and a short service name in a size that reads from arm's length. Larger valves or longer descriptions use 2 × 3 or 3 × 3 inch tags. Send the longest description and we will confirm the text height.
Do the tags come with chains?
Tags are drilled with a hanging hole sized for your chain, wire or zip tie. Tell us the hole diameter you need, or the fastener you plan to use, when you order.
Are phenolic valve tags suitable for mechanical rooms?
Phenolic is rigid, non-conductive and resists oils and common cleaning chemicals, which is why it is the standard material for engraved valve identification. If your specification requires a particular grade or a rating for a specific environment, send it and we will confirm against the supplier data before engraving.
